Free-flowing Spain turn on the style to dispatch Austria and march into last 16

Spain appear to have timed their run to perfection, saving their finest performance of FIFA World Cup 2026 for the business end of the tournament. Their comprehensive Round of 32 victory over Austria marked a significant improvement on their Group Stage performances.
Ralf Rangnick’s tactical blueprint relied on stifling Spain's creative hub, deploying a high-intensity press designed to isolate Rodri and Pedri in the central areas. However, Austria’s physical output at this tournament has looked increasingly diminished, and Luis de la Fuente’s side exposed those shortcomings from the opening whistle.
The breakthrough came after a beautifully worked move down the left flank. Marc Cucurella delivered a pinpoint, low cross into the heart of the penalty area, allowing Mikel Oyarzabal to guide a first-time finish into the back of the net. The goal lifted La Roja, who came agonizingly close to doubling their advantage before the interval; Alex Baena saw a magnificent free-kick rattle the crossbar, before the Austrian goalkeeper reacted sharply to deny Lamine Yamal from the rebound.
Rangnick, who had insisted pre-match that his side had nothing to lose, made sweeping personnel and tactical changes both during the interval and early in the second half. Yet, the adjustments did little to alter the pattern of the game as Spain maintained complete control of the game. The pressure told in the 68th minute when Baena turned provider, floating a delicate cross into the box for the overlapping right-back Pedro Porro to powerfully head home and effectively put the tie out of reach.
While Belgium’s dramatic comeback against Senegal yesterday proved that a two-goal deficit is not insurmountable in knockout football, this encounter was an entirely different proposition. Austria never threatened a resurgence, looking completely devoid of answers in the final third. Instead, it was Spain who added late gloss to the scoreline, with Oyarzabal latching onto another exquisite pass from Cucurella to coolly slot home his second of the night and seal a 3-0 victory.
Spain will discover their Round of 16 opponents later tonight, when Portugal take on Croatia.
