Bayer Leverkusen endured a shock defeat on the opening weekend of the Bundesliga, losing 3-2 away to top-flight newcomers SV Elversberg.

The hosts stunned one of the league's favourites with a sensational start. By the 10th minute, Elversberg were already two goals ahead, with Petkov and Campbell finding the net to leave the visitors in serious trouble.

The nightmare continued shortly after the restart when Mokwa struck to make it 3-0. Facing a huge deficit, Bayer Leverkusen finally found their response and launched a desperate fightback.

Patrik Schick and Francis Onyeka Koffi pulled goals back to give the visitors hope of completing an extraordinary comeback. However, Elversberg held firm during the closing stages to secure a famous 3-2 victory.
