Goalkeeper Unai Simón and the reigning European champions, Spain, are preparing to face the Netherlands in the first leg of their UEFA Nations League quarter-final. Despite already holding the title of both European champions and winners of the previous Nations League, Simón insists that defending these honors remains a top priority.

“Of course, we’re the reigning European champions and the winners of the last Nations League,” Simón said. “Beyond the usual ‘one match at a time’ approach, our aim is to win in the quarter-finals and make it to the Final Four. We want to think big and defend the title we’ve already claimed. It all starts with two excellent matches against a very tough Netherlands side.”

When asked about the importance placed on the Nations League, Simón admitted that perceptions have changed since its inception: “At first, it seemed like the tournament might not be taken seriously. But then we saw Portugal win it, going through very strong opponents to claim the trophy. Then France did the same, and after that, we won the final. The Nations League features a high level of competition, even if it doesn’t hold the same prestige as a World Cup or European Championship.”

Still, the Spanish shot-stopper is adamant that the level of opposition demands full focus: “You face some of the toughest national teams out there. Our qualifying group was already difficult, and now we take on the Dutch. They’re a serious contender, and while the Nations League may not match the status of a World Cup, we certainly treat it with respect. We want to show Europe that we can compete and beat any rival.”

Simón also addressed the two-legged format, which is more common in club football than in international play: “Ultimately, as with any knockout tie, you need a strong first leg away from home. Don’t concede too many, don’t let the match become too open, and return home with a result that keeps you in a good position. But that doesn’t mean we won’t chase victory in both games. We’re Spain, and we aim to show Europe and the world who we are. We aren’t satisfied with draws or defeats—we want to win both away and at home.”

The first leg of the Nations League quarter-final between the Netherlands and Spain will take place on March 20.
