Real - Manchester City 1:2

Manchester City claimed a statement victory in one of the headline fixtures of the Champions League group stage, defeating long-time rivals Real Madrid at the Bernabéu. Under Pep Guardiola, City once again proved their superiority in a clash that has defined European football in recent years.

This time, however, the meeting did not come in the knockout rounds, meaning the result wasn’t supposed to carry the same weight — if not for one twist. A string of poor domestic performances and growing concern over the team’s dressing-room atmosphere had fuelled speculation about a possible sacking of Xabi Alonso. According to insiders, the match against Manchester City was viewed internally as his final opportunity to steady the ship.

The chance slipped away. Yet few could fault Real Madrid for their intensity or desire. Los Blancos opened the match aggressively and pushed City onto the back foot. When the tempo finally slowed, the hosts still managed to strike first — and it came from City’s long-time nemesis, Rodrygo. The Brazilian, selected only because Kylian Mbappé was unavailable through injury, once again punished the English champions with a precise effort into the far bottom corner.

For a long stretch, City couldn’t muster a single shot. But the tide turned on the 35-minute mark, when they earned a corner. The initial attempt was saved by Thibaut Courtois, but Matt O’Riley reacted quickest to bury the rebound and equalise. Just eight minutes later, VAR intervened as Antonio Rüdiger brought down Erling Haaland inside the area. After reviewing the footage, the referee pointed to the spot, and the Norwegian dispatched the penalty with trademark composure — 2–1 to City.

After the break, Real Madrid pushed forward with urgency, though genuine danger near Gianluigi Donnarumma’s goal only materialised in the closing stages. Vinícius Júnior and rising star Endrick each threatened with powerful efforts, but neither found the equaliser.

Real ultimately suffered their second defeat of the Champions League campaign. While not disastrous — they still sit comfortably within the top eight — the loss is certain to intensify the discussions surrounding Xabi Alonso’s future. City, meanwhile, walk away with a performance that reinforces their status as the team to beat.
