Bundesliga has been hit particularly hard by the Premier League’s aggressive recruitment

The Premier League has once again proven its financial dominance in world football, breaking all-time spending records during the 2025 summer transfer window. English clubs splashed out a staggering £3 billion (approx. €3.3 billion), setting a new benchmark for global transfer activity.

This unprecedented spending spree was largely fueled by the league’s lucrative new four-year domestic broadcast deal, worth an eye-watering £6.7 billion. With more money flowing into club coffers than ever before, teams across the league felt emboldened to invest heavily in talent.

Even newly promoted Sunderland made headlines, spending an impressive £118 million to bolster their squad—a figure that eclipses the total summer spending of entire leagues elsewhere in Europe.

Outside of England, only Real Madrid came close to matching the Premier League’s financial firepower, securing marquee signings in their quest to reclaim European supremacy.

But not everyone is impressed. Uli Hoeneß, honorary president of Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, criticised the Premier League’s “completely insane” spending habits. Speaking to German media, Hoeneß warned: “This cannot end well.”

The Bundesliga has been hit particularly hard by the Premier League’s aggressive recruitment, losing several key players who were considered foundational figures at their clubs—including Benjamin Šeško, Florian Wirtz, and Nick Woltemade.
