The Italian Grand Prix at Monza delivered a dramatic Formula 1 race packed with twists, strategic gambles and a remarkable comeback from Kimi Antonelli.

To understand how the race unfolded, it is worth starting with the driver who endured one of the most difficult afternoons of the weekend: Charles Leclerc. The Ferrari driver was involved in an early battle with his team-mate Lewis Hamilton, forcing the Briton off the track and costing him a number of positions.

Things then went from bad to worse for Leclerc. On lap four, he ran off the circuit and hit the barriers, triggering a red flag and setting up the most fascinating element of the race — a battle of strategy.

George Russell opted to gamble on the hard tyres, hoping to make them last all the way to the chequered flag. For a long time, the Mercedes driver's bold plan looked as though it might pay off. But there was another Mercedes coming through the field at remarkable speed.

Starting from 19th, championship leader Kimi Antonelli produced a stunning recovery drive. By lap 18, the Italian had moved into the lead and suddenly found himself in contention for a memorable home victory.

Unlike Russell, Antonelli made a second pit stop later in the race. The decision proved crucial. With just three laps remaining, he caught and passed his team-mate to take the lead and secure a spectacular victory in front of the home crowd at Monza.

The triumph was historic. Antonelli became the first Italian driver to win at Monza since 1966 — a remarkable 60-year wait. The number 66 also took on another meaning on Sunday: it is now the gap between Antonelli and Russell in the battle for the Formula 1 drivers' championship.

Max Verstappen completed the podium for Red Bull, while the two McLaren drivers, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, followed him across the line.
