Champions League: Odegaard Breaks Down Napoli’s Defensive Wall

Napoli - Arsenal 0:1

A gruelling tactical siege in Naples ended with a 1-0 victory for Arsenal over a deeply defensive Napoli side. The status of the Gunners as one of the Champions League favourites was pushed to the limit by the Italian defensive wall, but a decisive strike from Martin Odegaard in the 75th minute ensured Arsenal began their European campaign with three points.

Napoli attempted to turn the opening stages into a slow, physical battle, relying on occasional attacking breaks through Kevin De Bruyne. The Belgian midfielder tested the visitors with a dangerous long-range effort in the 15th minute, forcing Arsenal to remain alert. Mikel Arteta's side soon took control of possession and began patiently probing a well-organised Napoli defence.

Mikel Merino came close when he threw himself at a dangerous cross inside the six-yard box, but Alex Meret reacted sharply to keep the ball out. The best chance of the first half fell to Bukayo Saka shortly before the interval, only for the Arsenal winger to fire his effort over the crossbar.

The second half became a test of survival for the hosts, with all ten outfield players retreating behind the ball and forming a defensive block on the edge of their own penalty area. Arsenal continued the siege, searching for the one opening that could finally unlock the Napoli resistance.

That moment arrived in the 75th minute. Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard found just enough space to unleash a shot from around 18 metres. The ball took a deflection off Milinkovic-Savic and the post before squeezing into the net. It was the breakthrough the Gunners had been chasing and ultimately the goal that secured a hard-earned 1-0 victory.
