Shakhtar Donetsk Suffer Second Consecutive Champions League Defeat

Shakhtar Donetsk suffered their second consecutive defeat in the UEFA Champions League, losing 1-0 to Sporting CP in a match staged at Stamford Bridge in London. In a cautious contest between two sides reluctant to take unnecessary risks, one decisive goal proved enough to settle the outcome — just as it had for Shakhtar in their defeat in Milan two weeks earlier.
Arda Turan made no major surprises with his starting line-up or tactical approach. Before the match, the Shakhtar coach had stressed that his team would aim to win, while recognising that avoiding defeat would also be a valuable outcome. The first half suggested his players had taken the more cautious part of that message to heart.
As expected, Sporting looked to exploit Araujo’s pace down the left flank and the movement of striker Luis Suarez. However, Shakhtar’s defensive structure largely kept the Portuguese side at bay before they could create clear-cut chances. Araujo did threaten with a first-time effort after a cross from the right, while Shakhtar came close when Alisson Santana raced through and pushed the ball past the goalkeeper — only to take it too far and lose the opportunity to shoot.
The hosts’ best chance before the break arrived in the 43rd minute. Yehor Nazaryna delivered an excellent diagonal pass from the right into the six-yard box, where Kauã Elias found himself unmarked with a seemingly open goal in front of him. Somehow, the forward fired over the crossbar, wasting a golden opportunity to put Shakhtar ahead.
The tempo increased after half-time. Suarez and Doumbia quickly combined to launch a dangerous attack on Dmytro Riznyk’s goal, before Sporting defender Felicíssimo blocked Elias’ response following a solo run from Gleiker Mendoza.
The decisive moment came in the 59th minute. A ball played forward through the middle by Sporting took an unfortunate deflection off Pedro Henrique, effectively turning into an assist for Doumbia, who finished to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Riznyk was soon called upon to make an important save, denying a dangerous header from Quaresma. Gradually, however, Shakhtar pushed the game into Sporting’s half and began to build pressure in search of an equaliser.
Alisson was among the most threatening players for the Ukrainian side, repeatedly testing the goalkeeper with efforts towards the near bottom corner. One strike crashed against the post, while another was saved after the Sporting goalkeeper reacted quickly to get across his goal.
Shakhtar’s late onslaught nearly rescued a point in stoppage time. In the 91st minute, Oleg Ocheretko delivered a superb cross towards the far side of the six-yard box. Neverton, completely unmarked, met it with a close-range header but directed the ball straight into the goalkeeper’s hands.
The narrow defeat leaves Shakhtar Donetsk under pressure ahead of their final two Champions League fixtures. The Ukrainian side are scheduled to face Turkish club Fenerbahce at Stamford Bridge before travelling to Bratislava in December to take on Slovan Bratislava. With points becoming increasingly important, Shakhtar will need to be far more clinical in front of goal if they are to keep their European campaign alive.
