Gareth Southgate, England manager, talking to Channel 4 after the match against Germany:

"As a group, they've really come together this week. It's been a tough period for them. They've grown. We're going to a World Cup – at some point, you're going to be exposed to pressure. This week we've learnt a huge amount. They've had to step forward and, as a group, come closer together."

"Tonight, a couple of errors have cost us goals. But I've focused on the fact that they've played with tremendous spirit. They've shown a belief that we haven't seen in the last few games. I think the crowd could see that, and they rose to that."

"I'm more experienced so I can help to guide the players through it. They've really stepped up this week; communication has been good. There's been some outstanding leadership and we need that. Teams need to be really strong in their own dressing rooms and our players have done that this week."
