George Russell delivered a commanding performance to claim victory at the Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday, converting pole position into a hard-fought win after withstanding intense late pressure in a dramatic closing stint.
The Mercedes driver controlled much of the race, but the final laps proved anything but straightforward. Armed with fresher tyres, Red Bull's Max Verstappen rapidly closed the gap, while championship leader and Russell's teammate, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, also joined the fight for victory.
Despite the relentless pressure, Russell kept his composure to take the chequered flag. Verstappen crossed the line just over a second behind in second place, while Antonelli completed the podium.
It proved to be a frustrating afternoon for Ferrari. Charles Leclerc and seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton started from second and third on the grid but were unable to convert their strong qualifying performances into top results. Hamilton finished fifth, while Leclerc slipped to eighth after a difficult race.
The result strengthens Russell's momentum as the Formula 1 season continues, while the battle at the front remains fiercely competitive with Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari all still in the fight.
