Chelsea have topped the global spending chart when it comes to reinforcing their defence, having splashed an eye-watering €391.4 million on defenders over the last five years — more than any other club in world football.

The West London side leads the rankings, ahead of Tottenham Hotspur, who have invested €351 million in defensive signings during the same period. However, that spending hasn’t translated to defensive solidity: Spurs have conceded 59 goals this Premier League season — the fifth-worst record in the division.

Real Madrid Ranked 296th in Defender Spending

In stark contrast, Real Madrid have barely dipped into the market for defenders, spending just €5 million on their back line across the same five-year span — placing them 296th globally in that category.

The astonishing disparity reflects vastly different club strategies. While Chelsea have undergone repeated overhauls with changing managers and sporting directors, Madrid have relied on long-standing names like Dani Carvajal, David Alaba, and Éder Militão.

Alonso Pushes for Defensive Overhaul

Newly appointed Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso is now looking to modernize and reinforce the squad’s defensive structure. With the club already closing in on Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen, the summer window may mark a turning point in Real's long-frugal defensive policy.
