Two Colo Colo fans killed in stadium riots in Chile

A devastating tragedy struck South American football on Tuesday night, as the Copa Libertadores match between Colo-Colo and Fortaleza was abandoned following the death of two fans in a pre-match stampede in Santiago.

According to local police reports, a crowd of ticketless supporters attempted to storm the gates at the Estadio Monumental, leading to chaos outside the venue. Heavy barricades collapsed under the pressure of the crowd, tragically killing an 18-year-old woman and a 13-year-old boy.

One version of events suggests that a police vehicle dispersing tear gas exacerbated the panic, sparking the deadly rush toward the entrances.

Match Descends Into Chaos

The atmosphere inside the stadium turned violent after news of the tragedy reached the stands midway through the second half. Objects—including iron rods—were hurled from the terraces. A section of supporters breached pitchside barriers and entered the field.

Fortaleza players were rushed into the dressing room for safety, and match officials officially suspended the game. It remains unclear whether the match will be replayed or awarded, as CONMEBOL has yet to issue a formal ruling.

Growing Concerns Over Fan Safety

This tragedy has reignited concerns about fan safety in South American football, particularly in high-stakes matches like the Copa Libertadores. The incident marks one of the darkest nights in recent memory for Chilean football and has prompted an immediate investigation by authorities and the national football federation.
