Yakin’s Super Subs Shine as Switzerland Crush Bosnia

Switzerland took a major step towards the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after producing a dominant late display to defeat Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-1. Murat Yakin’s side not only secured three crucial points but also significantly boosted their goal difference in what could prove to be a decisive result in Group B.
The Swiss controlled much of the opening stages, enjoying the lion’s share of possession and repeatedly attacking down the flanks. Their game plan was clear: stretch the Bosnian defence and deliver dangerous balls into the box. However, despite their territorial dominance, the final pass often lacked precision, preventing them from turning pressure into clear-cut chances.
Bosnia and Herzegovina, meanwhile, looked to rely on veteran striker Edin Džeko whenever opportunities arose. Yet the experienced forward received little service throughout the contest and was rarely able to threaten the Swiss goal.
The pattern of the game remained largely unchanged after the break, with Switzerland continuing to dictate possession without finding a breakthrough. The turning point arrived in the 72nd minute when Murat Yakin made a bold triple substitution, introducing Ruben Vargas, Djibril Sow and Joan Manzambi.
The impact was immediate. Just two minutes later, following a dangerous cross and a failed Bosnian clearance, Joan Manzambi reacted quickest inside the penalty area and fired home to give Switzerland a deserved lead.
At 1-0, Bosnia still had every reason to believe they could remain competitive, especially with a crucial group-stage encounter against Qatar still to come. However, the contest dramatically shifted in the 80th minute when Enis Muharemović brought down Breel Embolo as the striker raced through on goal. The referee wasted no time in producing a straight red card.
With a numerical advantage, the Swiss ruthlessly punished their opponents. Ruben Vargas doubled the lead with a composed finish into the far bottom corner before turning provider moments later, setting up Joan Manzambi for his second goal of the evening.
To their credit, Bosnia managed to pull one back from a corner kick, with Mahmić unleashing a powerful first-time strike to score a consolation goal. But the final word belonged to Switzerland. Deep into stoppage time, the Swiss won a penalty, and captain Granit Xhaka calmly converted from the spot to complete a 4-1 victory.
