The match at Anfield was a rollercoaster of emotions

In one of the most electrifying matches of the 2024/25 European season, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) edged out Liverpool in a dramatic penalty shootout to secure their place in the Champions League quarterfinals. The clash at Anfield was a rollercoaster of emotions, with both teams battling fiercely over 120 minutes before the tie was decided from the spot.

Despite the lack of goals, the intensity and drama kept fans on the edge of their seats. Ultimately, it was Gianluigi Donnarumma who emerged as the hero, making two crucial saves in the penalty shootout to send PSG through.

Liverpool started strong, with Mohamed Salah creating two early chances. However, a defensive mix-up between Ibrahima Konaté and Alisson allowed Ousmane Dembélé to capitalize and slot the ball into an empty net, leveling the aggregate score at 1-1.

PSG had opportunities to extend their lead before halftime, but Alisson came up big, denying Bradley Barcola and Dembélé in one-on-one situations. The second half saw Liverpool push forward relentlessly, with Salah coming agonizingly close to equalizing, only for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to make a last-ditch clearance off the line.

Extra time brought more tension, as PSG came close to scoring through Lucas Beraldo and Doue, while Alisson once again denied Dembélé with a stunning save. The match ultimately went to penalties, where Donnarumma's heroics saved PSG. Salah was the only Liverpool player to convert his penalty, as Donnarumma stopped efforts from Darwin Núñez and Curtis Jones, sealing PSG's progression.
