Panathinaikos FC have officially confirmed the appointment of legendary Spanish coach

Panathinaikos FC have officially confirmed the appointment of legendary Spanish coach Rafael Benítez, one of the most decorated and experienced managers in world football. The 64-year-old takes charge in Athens, marking the start of a new chapter for the Greek giants.

Benítez has been out of management since March 2024, when he parted ways with Celta Vigo. Now, the veteran tactician — best known for his tactical discipline and European pedigree — returns to the touchline aiming to restore Panathinaikos to domestic and continental prominence.

Throughout his illustrious career, Benítez has managed some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Liverpool, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Napoli, Newcastle United, Valencia, Everton, Valladolid, Osasuna and Tenerife. His trophy cabinet includes the UEFA Champions League, two UEFA Europa League titles, a FIFA Club World Cup, and two La Liga championships with Valencia.

According to earlier reports, Panathinaikos had also held talks with Ukraine national team head coach Sergei Rebrov, but ultimately decided to move forward with a manager boasting a more extensive record at the highest levels of European football.
