Thomas Tuchel has selected a provisional 55-man squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, with several surprise inclusions already sparking debate across English football.

One of the biggest talking points is the return of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Luke Shaw. The Liverpool defender has been handed a major opportunity amid a growing injury crisis on the right side of England’s defence. Ben White is sidelined with a serious knee injury, while both Tino Livramento and Reece James are still working their way back to full fitness.

Meanwhile, Luke Shaw could make his long-awaited return to the national team for the first time since the UEFA Euro 2024 final. The Manchester United full-back has rediscovered impressive form in recent weeks, convincing Thomas Tuchel that he may still have a crucial role to play on football’s biggest stage.

The provisional squad also includes exciting Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott, while veteran striker Danny Welbeck has earned recognition after an outstanding campaign in front of goal, scoring 14 times this season.

Tuchel must now reduce the squad to the final 26 players before the official deadline on May 22. Reports suggest the German coach has so far preferred using Jarell Quansah in wider defensive areas, but England’s growing shortage of defenders could force a tactical rethink before the tournament begins.
