Boxing Day football tradition in England faces major shake-up

The traditional Boxing Day football schedule in England could undergo a significant change due to broadcasting commitments. Normally, fans enjoy a full round of Premier League fixtures on December 26, but in 2025 — when the date falls on a Friday — only one match is currently planned.
The remaining fixtures are expected to take place over the weekend, as clubs are contractually required to play 33 rounds on weekends and only five on weekdays. This scheduling conflict, influenced by FA Cup and European competitions, means the league has designated that week as a standard gameweek rather than a traditional Boxing Day round.
The decision has sparked frustration among supporters, with fan groups calling for greater transparency from broadcasters and league officials. According to reports, it would be the first time since 1945 that Boxing Day sees just a single Premier League fixture — breaking a cherished tradition of festive football in England.
