Sunderland are writing one of the most remarkable stories of the Premier League season so far

Sunderland are writing one of the most remarkable stories of the Premier League season so far, continuing their dream start with a dramatic 2–1 away victory over reigning FIFA Club World Cup champions Chelsea. The win marks the Black Cats’ fifth triumph of the 2025/26 campaign — their best-ever start to a Premier League season — and lifts them into second place in the table.

Chelsea struck first at Stamford Bridge when Alejandro Garnacho found the net early, putting the hosts ahead and seemingly on course for another routine win. But Sunderland refused to back down, and by the midway point of the first half, Wilson Isidor levelled the score.

What followed was a tense, end-to-end battle — until deep into stoppage time, when chaos turned into euphoria for the visitors. Brian Brobbey surged from midfield, drawing in two defenders before laying off a perfect ball to Chemsdine Talbi, who coolly slotted home into the far corner to complete a stunning comeback. Pandemonium erupted in the away end as Sunderland sealed all three points in the dying moments.
