Montpellier Relegated from Ligue 1 After 16 Seasons in Top Flight
It’s the end of an era for Montpellier HSC. The 2011/12 Ligue 1 champions have officially been relegated from France’s top tier after a 1-1 draw between Le Havre and AS Monaco mathematically confirmed their drop to Ligue 2.
Following that result, Montpellier can no longer climb above 17th place, sealing their fate after a woeful campaign. The club sits at the bottom of the table with just 15 points and a devastating goal difference of -49. Their 2025 form has been nothing short of disastrous, with the team suffering 11 straight defeats since the turn of the year.
Once a symbol of French football’s unpredictability and romance, the “Pailladins” will now have to rebuild in the second division after spending 16 consecutive seasons in Ligue 1.
One more team will be automatically relegated at the end of the 2024/25 season. The battle for survival is heating up, with clubs like Saint-Étienne, Le Havre, Angers, Nantes, Reims, and Toulouse all fighting to avoid the drop.
