Javier Mascherano is set to become the new head coach of Inter Miami, taking over from Gerardo Martino, who departs following the team’s playoff exit in the MLS. The appointment means Mascherano will reunite with his former Argentina teammate and global superstar Lionel Messi, this time in a player-coach dynamic.

The strong personal and professional relationship between Mascherano and Messi played a key role in Inter Miami’s decision to hire the Argentine legend. Their shared history, from international triumphs to memorable club moments, is seen as a foundation for fostering team unity and success.

To take the role, Mascherano stepped down as head coach of Argentina’s U-20 national team, a position he had held since 2021. His tenure with the youth side showcased his tactical acumen and ability to develop young talents, qualities that Inter Miami hopes will translate into success in Major League Soccer.

The move marks another bold step for Inter Miami as they continue to build a star-studded project around Messi, who joined the club in the summer of 2023.
