Javier Mascherano

Inter Miami began their FIFA Club World Cup journey with a goalless draw against Al Ahly, but head coach Javier Mascherano saw plenty to be optimistic about after a nervy start at Hard Rock Stadium.

“We were anxious in the first half,” admitted the former Argentina captain. “But in the second half, we controlled the game, created chances and played the football we believe in.”

Despite a scoreless debut, Mascherano praised the fighting spirit and tactical discipline of his side, especially in light of the high-stakes group featuring FC Porto and Palmeiras. “The team left a very good impression. This is the path forward… playing like this, we can beat anyone.”

Lionel Messi played the full 90 minutes and once again showed his class and commitment. “It’s admirable how much love Messi has for the game. After everything he’s achieved, he’s still here giving his all,” Mascherano added.

The Inter boss acknowledged the pressure of the occasion but believes his side are on the right track. “It’s a solid platform. We wanted to win, but the performance gives us belief.”
