Argentina rally from two goals down to preserve Messi's farewell tour

A sensational late fightback from Argentina broke Egyptian hearts and denied the Pharaohs what would have been the biggest shock of FIFA World Cup 2026. Facing a two-goal deficit midway through the second half, the defending champions somehow snatched a quarter-final berth courtesy of a dramatic 92nd-minute winner.

Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni had insisted his side had learned their lessons following a challenging final group encounter against Cape Verde. Yet, during the opening stages of the match, the Albiceleste showed little sign of adaptation. Operating at a noticeably sluggish tempo, the holders stuck rigidly to their possession-heavy approach but lacked any real penetration.

They were brutally punished for their passivity in the 15th minute. Mohamed Hany delivered a magnificent, curling cross from the right flank, allowing Yasser Ibrahim to guide a precise header into the bottom corner.

Argentina responded with immediate urgency, raising the intensity and winning a penalty just four minutes later when Nicolás Tagliafico was upended in the area. Lionel Messi stepped up to the spot, but Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir anticipated the strike perfectly, diving low to make a fine save. It was the fourth penalty Messi had failed to convert at the World Cup.

The Argentine onslaught intensified as the half progressed. Shobeir produced a world-class reflex save to deny an Alexis Mac Allister header, before Messi saw a trademark curling free-kick rattle the woodwork. The holders missed their final clear opening before the interval in the 39th minute, when Julián Álvarez met a Tagliafico cross at the near post, only for Shobeir to produce another miraculous stop.

The second half descended into pure footballing theatre. In the 58th minute, Egypt caught the holders cold on the counter-attack, with Ziko slotting past Emiliano Martínez after a fluid passing sequence involving Ahmed Hassan and Mohamed Salah. The Pharaohs' celebrations were short-lived, however, as a VAR review ruled the goal out for a foul in the buildup.

Undeterred, Egypt doubled their advantage just nine minutes later. After defending an Argentinian corner, Salah initiated a devastating break by releasing Hassan down the wing, who squared a perfect ball for Ziko to sweep home a first-time finish and make it 2-0.

Teetering on the brink of a catastrophic exit, the world champions threw caution to the wind in the closing stages. The fightback began in the 79th minute when centre-back Cristian Romero ventured forward to powerfully head home a cross from the flank. Just five minutes later, Messi redeemed his earlier penalty miss, pouncing on a loose ball inside the penalty area to unleash a thunderous strike that went in off the underside of the crossbar to level the scoring at 2-2.

Desperate to avoid the lottery of extra time, Argentina continued to pour bodies forward. The decisive twist arrived in the second minute of stoppage time. Salah was dispossessed on the edge of Argentina's penalty area while trying to orchestrate another attack, triggering a clinical Argentina counter-attack. Lautaro Martínez advanced down the right wing before delivering a pinpoint cross to the far post, where Enzo Fernández rose highest to head home a dramatic winner.

Those who argued Argentina had been handed an easy path through the knockout stages must now concede that the champions are being pushed to their absolute limits. The sheer scale of the relief was evident in Messi's tears at the final whistle. They were tears of relief rather than despair, keeping alive both Argentina's title defence and his final World Cup journey.
