Cristiano Ronaldo has officially confirmed that Portugal's Round of 16 defeat to Spain at the FIFA World Cup 2026 marked the final World Cup match of his remarkable career.

Speaking to reporters after Portugal's elimination, the national team captain reflected on the defeat and brought the curtain down on an extraordinary World Cup journey spanning two decades.

"Spain had a little bit of luck with their late goal, but that's football. Overall, it was a very even game. Of course, it's painful to leave the FIFA World Cup, but I gave everything I had. I did everything possible, and I leave with a clear conscience," Cristiano Ronaldo said.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner confirmed that the tournament in North America would be his final appearance on football's biggest stage.

"This was my last World Cup. As for everything else, I need time to think, speak with my family and avoid making emotional decisions. Tomorrow I'll wake up knowing I gave absolutely everything for my country."

Ronaldo also reflected on his legacy with the national team, highlighting the historic success he helped bring to Portugal.

"I won three trophies with Portugal, and before my time the national team had never lifted a major title. I'm proud of everything we've achieved. The most special trophy for me will always be UEFA Euro 2016. It means as much to me as winning a World Cup. I leave with complete peace of mind—tomorrow is a new day."
