France Cruise Past Sweden to Set Up Paraguay Clash

France continued their impressive FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a dominant 3-0 victory over Sweden in the Round of 32, securing their place in the last 16. Didier Deschamps' side delivered one of the most convincing performances of the knockout stage, leaving their Scandinavian opponents with virtually no route back into the contest.
The opening stages were evenly contested as both teams looked to establish control, but it did not take long for France to raise the tempo. Once they found their rhythm, chances began to arrive in waves, while Sweden relied on resilience and a slice of fortune to stay level.
Kylian Mbappe came within inches of breaking the deadlock in the 32nd minute, striking the post after finding space inside the penalty area. Just four minutes later, Michael Olise produced a spectacular overhead effort that rattled the crossbar before Ousmane Dembele fired the rebound narrowly wide.
The breakthrough finally arrived on the stroke of half-time. A brilliantly rehearsed corner routine caught the Swedish defence off guard, allowing Mbappe to guide a composed finish into the far corner and give France a deserved 1-0 lead.
Les Bleus resumed after the interval with the same intensity and quickly put the result beyond doubt. In the 53rd minute, Michael Olise produced a moment of pure quality, threading a perfectly weighted pass through a defender's legs to release Bradley Barcola, who calmly slotted past the goalkeeper to double the advantage.
Olise was not finished. With 16 minutes remaining, the winger collected his second assist of the evening, picking out Mbappe, who showed trademark composure by lifting his finish beyond the goalkeeper and into the far corner to complete the scoring.
Sweden nearly grabbed a late consolation when Viktor Gyokeres unleashed a powerful strike, but the France goalkeeper reacted superbly to push the effort behind for a corner.
