Haaland steers Norway into World Cup last 16 to set up mouthwatering Brazil clash

Erling Haaland’s clinical 86th-minute strike against Ivory Coast has guided Norway into the World Cup knockout rounds for the first time in their history. A formidable test now awaits the Nordic side, with five-time world champions Brazil standing between them and the quarter-finals.

For large periods of the encounter, it was the West Africans who dictated proceedings, despite entering the tie as firm underdogs in the eyes of many pundits. Incisive, overlapping runs down the flanks routinely stretched the Norwegian rearguard, forcing their defensive line into sustained defensive concentration. However, for all their territorial dominance, Ivory Coast lacked a clinical final ball to capitalize on their promising openings.

Norway are a side well-versed in defensive resilience, having famously executed a similar containment strategy to defeat Italy twice during qualification. They weathered the storm before delivering a masterclass in clinical efficiency on the counter-attack. In the 39th minute, Antonio Nusa took matters into his own hands, driving inside from the left flank before unleashing a phenomenal, curling effort that nestled into the top corner to break the deadlock.

Ivory Coast turned the screw after the interval, establishing sustained pressure in the final third. The pressure became so intense that even Haaland was forced to drop deep into his own penalty area, notably blocking a goalbound effort before clearing the danger. Norway failed to register their first shot of the second half until the 67th minute, yet it almost yielded a second goal; from a corner, Alexander Sørloth knocked the ball down into the goalmouth, only for Thorbjørn Heggem’s point-blank strike to be heroically blocked by an Ivorian defender.

The African nation reaped the rewards of their persistence via an inspired substitution in the 74th minute. The newly introduced Amad Diallo burst into the box from the right wing, effortlessly cutting inside two defenders with a subtle body feint before coolly slotting past the goalkeeper to restore parity.

Parity did not suit Norway, who immediately committed more bodies forward in search of a winner. Just as extra time appeared a certainty, the world-class quality of Haaland settled the tie. In the 86th minute, Patrick Berg initiated a neat one-two inside the penalty area, drawing three defenders toward him before squaring a perfect pass into the six-yard box for Haaland, who made no mistake with a simple tap-in.

Ivory Coast threw everything forward in the dying moments, and came agonizingly close to forcing extra time when Amad Diallo whipped a magnificent free-kick toward the top corner, only for Ørjan Nyland to produce a stunning, fingertip save. Norway held firm to book their historic place in the Round of 16, where they will face Brazil on July 5.
