Japan - Sweden 1:1

Japan and Sweden played out an intense 1-1 draw in their final FIFA World Cup 2026 Group F fixture, a result that proved enough to send both nations into the knockout stage after a tactical battle that came to life in the second half.

With qualification on the line, neither side was prepared to take unnecessary risks before the break. The opening 45 minutes resembled a high-level game of chess, as Japan and Sweden remained compact defensively, slowed the tempo whenever possible and left very little space for attacking opportunities. Clear-cut chances were few and far between in a contest dominated by discipline and tactical organisation.

The game finally burst into life on 56 minutes. Ritsu Doan produced a perfectly weighted through ball into the penalty area, where Daizen Maeda timed his run to perfection before calmly finishing beyond the goalkeeper to give Japan a deserved 1-0 lead.

However, the advantage lasted only five minutes. Sweden responded immediately through Anthony Elanga, who drove purposefully towards the edge of the box before unleashing a powerful strike that flew into the net to restore parity and set up a tense finale.

The closing stages belonged to Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, who delivered a match-saving performance under intense pressure. Deep into stoppage time, Sweden launched one final assault, and Alexander Isak looked certain to snatch a dramatic winner with a well-placed header. But Suzuki produced a stunning fingertip save to push the ball onto the crossbar and preserve a crucial point.

The draw sees Japan finish second in Group F with five points behind Netherlands, setting up a blockbuster knockout clash against Brazil in Houston on Monday. Sweden, meanwhile, also progress after collecting four points, securing their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout rounds as one of the advancing third-placed teams.
