England Frustrated by Ghana's Defensive Masterclass

England missed the opportunity to secure an early place in the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup 2026 and take full control of Group L after being held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by a resilient Ghana side.
Thomas Tuchel's men dominated possession from start to finish, controlling nearly 80 percent of the ball. However, their territorial advantage rarely translated into clear-cut chances as Ghana executed a disciplined defensive game plan, sitting deep and denying space in and around the penalty area.
The first half offered little encouragement for the European side. The Ghanaian goalkeeper was barely called into action, with Declan Rice firing over from distance and Harry Kane seeing a promising effort blocked by a wall of defenders just before the break. By halftime, England's expected goals (xG) tally stood at a modest 0.27, highlighting their struggles to break through the packed defence.
The pattern continued after the restart. England moved the ball patiently but often too slowly, allowing Ghana to maintain their compact shape. In fact, it was the African side who came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 79th minute when Prince Adu raced clear on goal. However, the forward hesitated at the crucial moment and the chance slipped away.
Recognising that his original approach was not delivering results, Thomas Tuchel made a series of bold attacking substitutions, effectively overhauling his frontline. The changes finally injected urgency into England's play during the closing stages.
Bukayo Saka forced a strong save with a powerful effort before Matt O'Riley rattled the crossbar from a dangerous delivery in the 87th minute. The rebound fell kindly to Harry Kane, but the England captain could only send his follow-up attempt over the bar, summing up a frustrating evening for the tournament favourites.
