2026 FIFA World Cup: USA Reach Knockout Stage After Victory Over Australia

USA - Australia 2:0

The United States secured a second consecutive win and qualified for the knockout rounds, yet their performance left room for debate despite another positive result.

That early opportunity proved to be one of the visitors' few bright moments in the first half. Unable to cope with the pace and movement of the American attack, the Socceroos were forced deep into their own half. The pressure eventually paid off for the hosts. Goalkeeper Patrick Beach, who had been one of the standout performers in the previous match, could do little to prevent an own goal from one of his defenders before Freeman doubled the advantage with a well-taken header.

Looking to change the momentum, Australia made three substitutions at half-time. The move suggested an aggressive attempt to get back into the contest, but the expected turnaround never materialised. The United States remained in control, dictating the tempo and limiting the visitors' opportunities, although their own attacking threat became less pronounced after the break.

The game finally sprang back to life following another Australian substitution. The introduction of Nestory Irankunda injected fresh energy into the side, with the dynamic forward inspiring his teammates to press higher, compete fiercely across the pitch and create a series of dangerous situations.

Despite their late surge, the Socceroos were unable to find a way back into the match. The United States managed the closing stages effectively and, at times, were content to slow the game down to protect their lead.
