Saudi Arabia - Uruguay 1:1

Delivers Another Group H Surprise

Uruguay missed a golden opportunity to take sole possession of first place in Group H after being held to a 1-1 draw by a resilient Saudi Arabia side at the FIFA World Cup 2026. Following Spain's slip-up earlier in the group, the South Americans had a clear path to the top of the standings but were unable to find a winning goal against determined opposition.

The two-time world champions started brightly and immediately looked to impose themselves through possession and attacking intent. Marcelo Bielsa's men targeted the flanks, where Federico Valverde and Maximiliano Araújo provided energy and creativity, while the forward partnership of Darwin Núñez and Federico Viñas constantly tested the Saudi defence.

The first warning arrived after only five minutes when Araújo unleashed a powerful effort from the edge of the box. However, Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais reacted brilliantly, pushing the ball behind for a corner.

Uruguay continued to create opportunities and should have taken the lead midway through the first half. Araújo delivered a perfectly weighted cross into the penalty area, finding Viñas, who launched himself forward and directed a diving header toward goal. Once again, Al-Owais came to his team's rescue with a superb reflex save.

Having survived sustained pressure, Saudi Arabia punished Uruguay's wastefulness just before the break. In the 41st minute, Musab Al-Juwayr swung in a dangerous corner that was initially met by Saud Abdulhamid. Goalkeeper Fernando Muslera produced an excellent stop, but the rebound fell kindly to Abdulelah Al-Amri, who reacted quickest to slot home and give the Green Falcons a shock 1-0 advantage.

The second half became a relentless siege of the Saudi penalty area. On the hour mark, Manuel Ugarte came agonisingly close to equalising when his effort struck the post.

Sensing the growing pressure, head coach Georgios Donis quickly reshaped his side, switching to a five-man defensive line in an attempt to protect the lead. For a while, the adjustment worked, with Saudi Arabia frustrating wave after wave of Uruguayan attacks.

However, the resistance was finally broken in the 80th minute. Following a dangerous delivery into the box, Al-Owais somehow denied Federico Viñas with another outstanding save. Yet the rebound dropped directly to Maximiliano Araújo, who made no mistake from close range to bring Uruguay level.

With momentum firmly on their side, Uruguay pushed desperately for a winner. Marcelo Bielsa refreshed his attack by introducing Brian Rodríguez, while seven minutes of stoppage time provided further hope for the South Americans.

But Mohammed Al-Owais refused to be beaten. The Saudi goalkeeper produced two crucial late saves to deny both Federico Valverde and Nicolás De La Cruz, ensuring his side secured a valuable point and added another memorable upset to the growing list of surprises at the FIFA World Cup 2026.
