The United States Men's National Team (USMNT) delivered a breathtaking performance in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Group D opener, dismantling Paraguay 4-1 at SoFi Stadium to make a remarkable piece of footballing history.

For the first time in the nation's history, the Americans scored four goals in a single Men's World Cup finals match. Four years ago in Qatar, the USMNT scored just three goals across four matches. Under Mauricio Pochettino, they matched that tally before half-time against Paraguay and added a fourth late on through Gio Reyna.

Echoes of 1930: Matching the Century-Old Standard

Beyond the scoring feat, the emphatic victory allowed Pochettino’s squad to equal the USMNT's record for the biggest World Cup victory.

For 96 long years, the pinnacle for American soccer remained the legendary three-goal victories achieved during the inaugural 1930 FIFA World Cup in Uruguay. In that tournament, the USMNT secured back-to-back 3-0 triumphs over Belgium and Paraguay en route to a historic third-place finish. Nearly a century later, the modern generation has finally matched that achievement on home soil.
