The change comes after 18-year-old Karl suffered a muscle injury

Germany have been dealt an early setback ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026, with RB Leipzig midfielder Assan Ouedraogo called up to replace injured youngster Lennart Karl in the national team squad.

According to Sky Germany, head coach Julian Nagelsmann has already informed Ouedraogo of his inclusion as the four-time world champions finalize their preparations for the tournament.

The change comes after 18-year-old Karl suffered a muscle injury, forcing Nagelsmann to make a late adjustment before Germany's opening match. Germany will begin their World Cup 2026 campaign on June 14 against Curaçao.

While Ouedraogo arrives as one of the most promising young midfielders in German football, his recent record has also been affected by fitness concerns. The former Schalke 04 academy graduate featured in just 19 matches for RB Leipzig during the 2025/26 season due to persistent knee problems.

Despite those setbacks, the talented midfielder still managed to contribute four goals and three assists.

Interestingly, Ouedraogo remains relatively inexperienced on the international stage, having made only one senior appearance for Germany prior to this call-up. The upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 could now provide the 19-year-old with the biggest opportunity of his career so far.
