Luka Modric is seriously considering retirement after the upcoming World Cup, with recent developments at AC Milan potentially closing the door on one final chapter in European football.

The Croatian legend, who turns 41 in September, has always maintained that he would only continue playing if the project around him offered genuine ambition and the chance to compete at the highest level. For Modric, motivation has never been about money or status — it has always been about trophies, elite competition, and staying relevant on football’s biggest stages.

However, AC Milan’s failure to secure qualification for the UEFA Champions League, combined with the departure of Massimiliano Allegri, appears to have fundamentally changed the landscape. The club’s management structure is now facing a major rebuild, and uncertainty surrounding the sporting project has only intensified.

From Modric’s perspective, the prospect of entering a transitional season without a realistic shot at major honours does not align with the standards he has set throughout his extraordinary career.
