Sporting CP - Arsenal 0:1

Arsenal secured another narrow victory — not one for the highlight reels, but one that perfectly reflects how Mikel Arteta’s side have been grinding out results this season. A single goal once again proved decisive, as the Gunners continue their push toward what they hope will be a historic campaign.

It was a first half that offered little clarity in terms of superiority. In terms of possession, Arsenal held the upper hand, but when it came to clear-cut chances, Sporting CP were more than competitive. The visitors looked dangerous from set-pieces — a known strength — and Noni Madueke even struck the crossbar directly from a corner. The hosts, meanwhile, struggled to test the goalkeeper, managing their first shot on target only toward the end of the half. That said, Sporting CP had already rattled the woodwork themselves and threatened David Raya’s goal on several occasions.

After the break, Arsenal attempted to raise the tempo and establish more fluid attacking patterns, but execution remained inconsistent. On 63 minutes, Martin Zubimendi found the net with a long-range effort, only for the goal to be ruled out due to a clear offside in the build-up. Overall, Sporting CP looked composed and disciplined defensively, showing little fear against their high-profile opponents — and, truthfully, Arsenal gave them few reasons to feel otherwise.

In the closing stages, the home side arguably looked the more dangerous, forcing David Raya into two crucial saves that kept Arsenal in the tie. A draw would have been a fair outcome, but football often rewards efficiency over flair. Deep into stoppage time, Mikel Arteta’s substitutions made the difference: Gabriel Martinelli delivered a precise lofted cross into the box, where Kai Havertz controlled calmly before slotting home the winner.
