Galatasaray - Liverpool 1:0

>

The “Istanbul cauldron” promised by Galatasaray supporters on pre-match banners became a brutal reality for Liverpool on a fierce European night. In the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16, the Turkish giants edged the reigning English champions 1–0, securing a slender but significant advantage before the return leg at Anfield.

Roared on by a relentless home crowd, Galatasaray began the match at a furious tempo. Every touch by the visitors was met with a deafening whistle, creating one of those intimidating European atmospheres that Istanbul is famous for. The breakthrough arrived as early as the 7th minute following a costly mistake from Ibrahima Konaté. The Liverpool defender conceded a corner that proved decisive. From the resulting delivery, Victor Osimhen rose highest and cleverly flicked the ball on for Mario Lemina, who powered a header into the net to ignite the stadium.

Liverpool had a golden chance to level the score almost immediately. Florian Wirtz found himself through on goal but failed to beat the goalkeeper in a one-on-one opportunity. With Alisson Becker unavailable, Arne Slot once again relied on Giorgi Mamardashvili, and the Georgian shot-stopper delivered, producing a string of impressive saves midway through the first half. Meanwhile, Ibrahima Konaté endured a difficult evening, repeatedly losing his positioning and allowing Victor Osimhen to threaten the Liverpool defence.

The visitors pushed harder after the break. Hugo Ekitike came close with an audacious attempt to chip the goalkeeper, but the ball drifted just over the crossbar. Late in the game, Ibrahima Konaté thought he had redeemed himself when he bundled the ball into the net following a set piece. However, the goal was ruled out for handball, crushing Liverpool’s hopes of an equaliser.
