Athletic Bilbao - Barcelona 0:1

Barcelona secured a hard-fought victory over Athletic Club at San Mamés, with a moment of brilliance from Lamine Yamal proving decisive in a tense La Liga encounter. The narrow win allows Hansi Flick’s team to maintain their advantage at the top of the table and prevent Real Madrid from closing the gap in the title race.

The match in Bilbao was far from a classic for long stretches. Both sides looked physically drained, and the tempo rarely reached its usual intensity. With one eye on an upcoming trip to face Newcastle United, Hansi Flick opted for squad rotation, a decision that affected Barcelona’s attacking fluidity.

Athletic Club nearly made the perfect start inside the opening minute. A deflected effort off João Cancelo looped dangerously towards goal and crashed against the crossbar, sparing the visitors from an early setback.

The breakthrough eventually arrived thanks to a flash of creativity in the second half. Just after the hour mark, Pedri produced a sublime through ball that sliced open the defence and released Lamine Yamal. The teenage star did the rest, curling a precise finish into the top corner beyond Unai Simón.

The closing stages saw Athletic Club push forward in search of an equaliser, piling pressure on the visitors. Marc Casadó struggled at times in midfield as the hosts increased the intensity, but Joan García delivered several crucial saves to preserve Barcelona’s slender lead.
