Villarreal - Real 0:2

Real Madrid have returned to the top of the La Liga table after a solid away victory over Villarreal, ending a lengthy wait to reclaim first place — even if only temporarily. The Yellow Submarine suffered a second consecutive home defeat, underlining that they are not yet ready to seriously challenge Spain’s elite.

Villarreal resisted the temptation to engage in an open, end-to-end contest with Real Madrid, opting instead for a more cautious approach. Still, there were moments when the hosts caused genuine concern among the travelling supporters. In fact, the first real chance of the match fell to Villarreal. In the 13th minute, a left-wing attack ended with a cross to the far post, where Tajon Buchanan struck first time — only for Alvaro Carreras to bravely block the effort.

Real Madrid dominated possession for long spells but initially struggled to stretch Villarreal’s compact defensive structure. That changed shortly after the break. Vinicius Junior burst down the left flank and cut the ball back towards the centre. The pass was slightly loose, the defender hesitated — and Kylian Mbappe was perfectly positioned to pounce, opening the scoring with ruthless efficiency.

Villarreal were handed a golden opportunity to respond on 62 minutes when they worked a set-piece from the left. The ball found Gerard Moreno unmarked in the middle of the box, but the striker blazed his effort over the crossbar, much to the frustration of the home crowd.

Any hopes of a dramatic finale quickly faded. Real Madrid managed the closing stages with authority, controlling both possession and tempo. Deep into stoppage time, the visitors were awarded a penalty after Kylian Mbappe was brought down in the area. The French superstar stepped up himself — and cheekily converted with a Panenka, drawing smiles on the bench and a nod to Brahim Diaz, who had just entered the fray.
