Spanish Super Cup

Barcelona claimed their first trophy of the season by defeating Real Madrid 3–2 in the Spanish Super Cup final. Whether this dramatic Clásico proves to be the final match of Xabi Alonso’s tenure as Real Madrid head coach remains to be seen in the coming days.

Recent editions of El Clásico have been marked by high-scoring encounters, and this final followed the same pattern, even if the opening goal took time to arrive. What followed was a blistering end to the first half that fully lived up to expectations.

The deadlock was broken in the 36th minute by Raphinha. Collecting the ball on the left flank, the Brazilian drove into the penalty area and curled a precise finish into the far bottom corner. That strike sparked a chaotic five-minute spell in which three goals were scored. The first response came from Vinícius Júnior, who ended a 19-match goal drought.

Real and their supporters barely had time to celebrate before Robert Lewandowski raced through one-on-one and scored in his fourth consecutive Spanish Super Cup final. The drama was not over yet. In the sixth minute of added time, Gonzalo García reacted quickest to a rebound to make it 2–2 at the break.

The second half was inevitably less open and more cautious, with the cost of a mistake looming large. It was Real who ultimately paid the price, failing to close down Raphinha, whose shot took a deflection off Asensio and found its way past Thibaut Courtois.

With the win, Barcelona secured their third Spanish Super Cup final victory in the last four years, while Real Madrid were left empty-handed on the night.
