The Spanish giants believe UEFA’s actions unfairly restricted clubs’ freedom to compete

Real Madrid are reportedly seeking “substantial compensation” from UEFA after Europe’s governing football body lost an appeal in court regarding the failed European Super League project. The Spanish giants believe UEFA’s actions unfairly restricted clubs’ freedom to compete, resulting in significant financial and reputational damage.

On Wednesday, a Madrid court upheld a previous ruling from May 2024, which found that UEFA, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), and La Liga engaged in anti-competitive behaviour and abused their dominant position by preventing clubs from joining a breakaway competition. The court’s decision effectively reaffirmed that football’s governing bodies overstepped their authority during the Super League controversy.

In response, UEFA issued a statement insisting that the ruling “does not validate” the Super League project and “does not undermine UEFA’s existing licensing framework.” The organisation maintains that its rules are essential to preserve the integrity of European football.

Real Madrid were among the original 12 clubs — including six sides from the Premier League — that announced plans to form the European Super League in 2021. The initiative collapsed within days after intense backlash from fans, national associations, and governments.
