Rafael Leão Withdraws from Portugal Squad
Portugal will be without star forward Rafael Leão for their upcoming Euro 2024 qualifier against Hungary, after the AC Milan attacker returned to Italy following a mutual agreement between club and country.
The 24-year-old had only recently returned to action after nearly a month out with injury and was being closely monitored by the national team's medical staff throughout the October international window.
Portugal manager Roberto Martinez brought Leão off the bench in the 61st minute of their previous fixture against Republic of Ireland, but the decision has now been made to rest him for the second match of the break.
"Rafael Leão has left the Portugal squad and will not take part in the match against Hungary. The decision was made by head coach Roberto Martinez after assessing the forward’s physical condition," the Portuguese FA said in an official statement.
