Galatasaray - Liverpool 1:0

Liverpool delivered arguably their worst performance of the season as they fell 1–0 to Galatasaray in Istanbul during Matchday 2 of the UEFA Champions League group stage. For a side known for their attacking flair, this was a surprisingly toothless and disjointed display — one that raises serious questions about momentum under new boss Arne Slot.

From the opening minutes, Galatasaray looked hungrier, sharper, and more dangerous. Within 90 seconds, Barış Yılmaz found himself one-on-one with Alisson, but the Brazilian goalkeeper produced a superb save to keep things level.

Liverpool had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 14th minute. Hugo Ekitike broke clear but failed to convert, and the rebound from Cody Gakpo was expertly blocked by Angeliño. Just moments later, disaster struck at the other end: Dominik Szoboszlai caught Barış with an arm inside the box, and the referee pointed to the spot without hesitation.

Victor Osimhen stepped up and smashed the penalty down the middle, sending Alisson the wrong way — 1–0 to the hosts.

Alisson Shines, But Liverpool Fade

Liverpool continued to look fragile at the back and uninspired going forward. On 32 minutes, Wirtz tested Çakır with a powerful effort from distance, but the Turkish goalkeeper was equal to it. From the resulting corner, efforts from Kerkes and Ekitike were blocked in a flurry of bodies.

Just before half-time, Osimhen tried an audacious chip over Alisson, only for the Liverpool shot-stopper to get fingertips on the ball. In stoppage time, Galatasaray demanded a second penalty after the ball struck a Liverpool hand inside the box — but referee François Letexier waved play off, ruling the deflection was unintentional from close range.

Second Half, Same Story

Liverpool came out after the break with more intent, and nearly equalised straight away. Jeremie Frimpong whipped in a low cross, and Ekitike attempted a cheeky backheel, but Çakır held firm at the near post.

But any hope of a comeback quickly faded. A poor turnover from Ibrahima Konaté in the 50th minute gave Osimhen another clear chance, but once again Alisson denied him with a world-class save — easily Liverpool’s best player on the night.

From that point on, the Reds struggled to create anything of substance. Galatasaray managed the game expertly, cutting off supply lines, frustrating Slot's side, and ultimately securing three massive points in Group Stage drama.
