The UEFA Super Cup is poised for a dramatic transformation

The UEFA Super Cup is poised for a dramatic transformation, as reports suggest the competition could evolve from a single-match showdown into a four-team mini-tournament, held outside of Europe.

Currently contested by the winners of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, the Super Cup may soon feature four clubs, including potentially the champions of the UEFA Europa Conference League or a high-profile invitee.

More strikingly, the revamped competition is expected to leave the European continent altogether. According to early plans, the United States is the leading candidate to host the new format, with several East Coast and West Coast venues under consideration. The Middle East—a common destination for other national Super Cups, such as those of Italy and Spain—is also being explored as a backup option.

The changes are aimed at expanding UEFA’s global footprint and tapping into growing markets abroad, especially in North America, where interest in European football is surging year-on-year.

Meanwhile, the 2025 edition of the Super Cup will still be held in its traditional format. Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur are set to face off tonight in what could be one of the final editions of the one-match setup.
