A new golden generation has emerged

England U21 have successfully defended their title and lifted the UEFA Euro U21 2025 trophy, securing a dramatic 3-2 extra-time win over Germany U21 in a pulsating final that will live long in the memory of fans across Europe.

Under the guidance of head coach Lee Carsley, the Young Lions avenged their group-stage defeat to Germany with a composed yet fiery performance in the final showdown. It was a match filled with momentum swings, last-minute drama, and a spectacular finish that underlined England’s growing dominance at the youth level.

Harvey Elliott set the tone early, capitalising on a defensive lapse to slot home inside just five minutes. The pressure didn’t stop there. On 24 minutes, a lightning-quick counterattack saw James McAtee release Omari Hutchinson, who coolly fired past the keeper to double England’s lead.

At that point, Germany looked out of sync, a far cry from the composed side that had cruised through earlier stages of the tournament. England could have buried the game before halftime, spurning two golden chances to make it 3-0. But football rarely follows the script.

On the cusp of halftime, Nelson Weiper gave Germany hope, heading in from a pinpoint cross from the left to halve the deficit. It was a goal that turned the tide.

The second half saw a reinvigorated Germany take control. Fifteen minutes after the restart, Merlin Röhl delivered a dangerous corner that eventually fell to Luca Netz, who curled a sublime strike into the top corner to level the score at 2-2. From that moment, both sides threw everything at each other. England were nearly punished late on, but the crossbar came to their rescue in the dying seconds of normal time.

Extra-time brought new energy—and a final twist. Just minutes in, Jarell Quansah whipped in a cross from the right, and Sammy Braybrooke rose highest to head home England’s third. Germany launched a desperate assault in search of an equaliser, rattling the bar once more, but there would be no comeback this time.

At the final whistle, the England U21 squad erupted in celebration as they claimed back-to-back UEFA European Under-21 Championship titles. A new golden generation has emerged, and under Lee Carsley, they continue to shine on the biggest stage of youth football.
