Bayer Leverkusen are actively preparing for life after Xabi Alonso

Bayer Leverkusen are actively preparing for life after Xabi Alonso, as the highly-rated Spanish coach is widely expected to take over at Real Madrid following the end of the current season.

According to reports from German outlet Kicker, the Bundesliga champions-elect have identified former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag as their number one candidate to replace Alonso. The Dutchman, who won three Eredivisie titles with Ajax and lifted both the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup with United, is reportedly open to a return to top-level management in continental Europe.

Real Madrid are expected to accelerate talks with Alonso’s representatives in the coming weeks. With Carlo Ancelotti set to step aside, Los Blancos are keen to secure a deal for the former midfielder before their departure to the United States for the expanded FIFA Club World Cup in mid-June.

Bayer Leverkusen’s season concludes on May 17, and the club aims to finalise Alonso’s successor shortly thereafter. While Ten Hag is seen as the leading choice, another prominent name reportedly under consideration is Xavi Hernández, the outgoing Barcelona head coach and club legend.
