Doctors on Trial: 7 Medics Accused in Diego Maradona’s Death
Seven doctors and nurses are set to face trial on Monday over allegations they were involved in the death of Argentine football icon Diego Maradona. The proceedings, originally scheduled to begin on June 4, have been postponed twice, and the medical professionals now stand to face sentences of up to 25 years if found guilty.
Prosecutors claim that the accused provided “reckless” and “inadequate” home care, leaving Maradona to endure a “prolonged, agonizing period” prior to his death. A panel of 20 medical experts convened by the Argentine state attorney in 2021 concluded that the legendary footballer “had a greater chance of survival” if he had received proper treatment in a specialized facility.
The investigating judge in the case noted that each member of the medical team played a role in the events leading up to Maradona’s death on November 25, 2020. The 60-year-old died from a heart attack at his home in Tigre.
