Arsenal Eyes €55M Deal for Atalanta Striker Mateo Retegui
Arsenal has set its sights on bolstering their attacking options with a €55 million bid for Atalanta forward Mateo Retegui, according to La Repubblica. The unexpected move highlights the Gunners’ determination to strengthen their frontline amid challenges in securing alternative targets.
Initially, Arsenal’s primary targets were Sweden internationals Alexander Isak (Newcastle) and Victor Gyökeres (Sporting CP). However, logistical and financial hurdles rendered both transfers unfeasible, prompting the club to turn its attention to Retegui.
While Retegui may not have been Arsenal’s first choice, his current form makes him a worthy candidate. The 25-year-old has scored 16 goals and provided 5 assists in 31 matches for Atalanta and the Italian national team this season, showcasing his ability to deliver in the final third.
Atalanta, however, may be reluctant to part with Retegui. The striker was acquired from Genoa for €22 million in the summer of 2024 on the recommendation of head coach Gian Piero Gasperini, who viewed him as a key component of the team’s plans. Nevertheless, a significant profit could tempt the Bergamo club into a sale.
As Arsenal continues its search for attacking reinforcements, the potential addition of Retegui could provide the firepower needed to push for success in the Premier League and Europe.
