Nico Williams: "Dreaming of Leading Spain to the World Cup Final in 2026"
Athletic Bilbao winger and Spain international Nico Williams has shared his aspirations for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup in an interview with FIFA.com. The young star spoke about his ambitions, the team's potential, and his childhood memories of Spain's 2010 triumph.
Balancing Pressure and Ambition
"I don’t want to put extra pressure on us, but we’re fully aware of our status both in Europe and globally," Williams said. "We know our potential, but overloading ourselves with pressure can backfire. We’ll head to the United States to compete with the best, knowing exactly who we are. I’m eagerly awaiting the tournament—I want us to qualify and be part of the final squad heading to the World Cup."
Inspired by Spain’s 2010 Glory
For Nico, the 2010 World Cup win remains an indelible memory.
"My brightest childhood memory is from the FIFA 2010 World Cup. I remember Andrés Iniesta’s goal like it was yesterday. That final is crystal clear in my mind, and I hope we have the chance to follow in their footsteps and reach another World Cup final ourselves."
Chasing Childhood Dreams
Reflecting on his success, including a UEFA Euro 2024 victory and Copa del Rey triumph, Williams described the thrill of achieving milestones.
"Winning those titles was incredible—words can’t capture those moments. I can’t even imagine what it would feel like to win a World Cup. It’s been my dream since I was a child. Hopefully, I’ll get the coach’s nod and the opportunity to achieve something truly special. I’m full of ambition for what lies ahead."
The Road Ahead for Spain
As Spain prepares for the 2026 World Cup qualification campaign, optimism runs high for a team brimming with young talent. The tournament’s qualification draw is set for December 13.
