Näslund’s bronze medal from the 1980 Winter Olympics

One of Sweden's all-time hockey greats, Mats Näslund, has made the surprising decision to auction off part of his extensive collection of trophies and memorabilia. Despite his illustrious career and the sentimental value of these items, Näslund clarified that his decision is not motivated by financial difficulties.

A Personal Choice

Speaking to Aftonbladet, the former Montreal Canadiens star explained his reasoning:

"I asked my kids if they wanted anything to keep, but I didn’t get much of a response. So, I decided to sell. I’ve never been the type of person who decorates walls with jerseys or fills shelves with trophies. If you’re a winner, you know it—you don’t need to show it off. When people want to see my Olympic gold or Stanley Cup ring, I have to go up to the attic to fetch them."

What’s on the Block?

Among the items up for auction are Näslund’s bronze medal from the 1980 Winter Olympics and jerseys from his time with the Montreal Canadiens and the Swedish national team. However, some of his most prized possessions, such as the 1986 Stanley Cup memorabilia and his Olympic gold medal from Lillehammer 1994, will remain part of his private collection—for now.
