The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unveiled the final five contenders for the prestigious 2024 African Player of the Year award. Notably, the accolade will go to a first-time winner, marking a new chapter in the history of this award.

The Finalists

The shortlist includes four standout players from Europe’s elite leagues and one exceptional performer from Africa's domestic competitions:

  • Simon Adingra (Ivory Coast, Brighton & Hove Albion): The versatile winger has enjoyed a breakout season in the Premier League, contributing both goals and assists for Brighton.
  • Serhou Guirassy (Guinea, Borussia Dortmund): A prolific striker in the Bundesliga, Guirassy has been a revelation this season, making headlines with his clinical finishing.
  • Achraf Hakimi (Morocco, Paris Saint-Germain): The dynamic full-back continues to shine for PSG, adding defensive solidity and attacking flair to the French giants.
  • Ademola Lookman (Nigeria, Atalanta): The creative forward has been instrumental for Atalanta in Serie A, combining technical skill with goal-scoring prowess.
  • Ronwen Williams (South Africa, Mamelodi Sundowns): The only nominee from an African club, Williams has been a rock between the posts, guiding Sundowns to domestic and continental success.
  • The End of an Era

Over the past five years, the award has been dominated by established icons. Mohamed Salah (twice) and Sadio Mané (twice) shared four of those honors, while Victor Osimhen claimed the title last year. However, with none of these former winners in contention this year, the stage is set for a new star to emerge.

    What’s Next?

The winner will be announced at the CAF Awards 2024, set to take place on December 16 in Marrakech, Morocco. The ceremony will celebrate African football’s finest talent and highlight the incredible contributions of players both on and off the pitch.
