Michael Carrick has dropped Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes from the starting line-up for today's Premier League fixture against Bournemouth, punishing the playmaker for his scathing public remarks earlier in the week.
The Portuguese international has paid an immediate tactical price for his fiery post-match assessment following United’s humiliating 4-1 Champions League defeat against Como. In the wake of that result, which extended the club’s winless run to seven matches, Fernandes openly questioned the tactical approach and game plan implemented by his under-fire manager.
Today marks the first Premier League fixture of the campaign in which the club captain has not been named in the starting eleven.
Fernandes trained with the first-team squad as normal on Friday and Saturday and remained fully fit and eligible for selection, leaving Carrick’s decision as an unequivocal statement of disciplinary authority amid mounting scrutiny over his position at Old Trafford.
