Manchester United are weighing up an approach for Julian Nagelsmann to take over as head coach should they decide to dismiss Michael Carrick, according to reports from The Telegraph.
Scrutiny surrounding Carrick’s tenure has intensified significantly following an embarrassing 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Como in the Champions League. Club captain Bruno Fernandes offered a scathing public assessment of the side’s performance and tactical setup in the aftermath, with the Red Devils having now registered just two wins from 11 matches across all competitions, failing to taste victory in any of their last seven outings.
The German tactician, 39, who has been out of work since departing his role in charge of the German national team, is reportedly open to taking the reins at Old Trafford. Nagelsmann is fluent in English and maintains a close working relationship with United’s director of global talent Christopher Vivell, with whom he previously collaborated during a successful spell at RB Leipzig.
Brighton’s Fabian Hürzeler, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, and Aston Villa manager Unai Emery have also been mooted as potential alternatives should the Old Trafford hierarchy decide that Carrick's position is untenable.
